Runner's Gift Guide: Kay D @kayonthego

Here are more gift ideas for the runners in your life.....or maybe even for yourself!

Are you looking for a gift for a runner this holiday season?  Let our runners help you out!  With a variety of runners in spanned across 4 seasons, we have the plenty of knowledge on what's best when hitting the concrete.

We asked our CRew to share the best gifts to give to runners this holiday season.  The gifts they would GIVE are products that have tried before and think that other runners should check them out.  The gifts they would RECEIVE are their wish list items to complete their ultimate running kit.  Hopefully Santa is out there reading this!

Next up is Season 3 runner, Kay @kayonthego:

TO GIVE: KNUCKLE LIGHTS

I run Ragnars and at night, and think Knuckle Lights are brilliant.  They're not expensive either and get around the problem of having a headlamp bouncing around all the time.

TO RECEIVE: NIKE HYPERSHIELD FLASH WOMEN'S RUNNING JACKET

Currently lusting after the latest Nike HyperShield Flash Women's running jacket.  Whilst there are loads of other brands out there, Nike really understands the intersection of fashion and technology. I have a flash jacket that's too small now (thanks CR3 for helping me get in shape and drop a dress size!) but that's in great condition and meets my needs: thumb-hole sleeves, visibility, durability, great fit..... only a cool $400......

TO GIVE: CEP COMPRESSION SOCKS

CEP compression socks or calf sleeves is a small, fun stocking stuffer and comes in many colors to suit any personality. It says, "Hey, I know you love running and I really want you to be able to go the distance! I care about your training and recovery processes!" (Especially for some of us on the older side!)  Not wearing them in a half marathon wreaks havoc on my calves. I get spasms and calf pain - and I don't think I'm exaggerating either, I have enough points of data to establish a solid cause-and-effect! So now I will not run longer distances without some type of compression. ;-)

TO RECEIVE: CRYOTHERAPHY CHAMBER

This is a dream item. Recovery is everything! It's just as important as the sweat equity. I know from experience that the more effort I put into recovery, the better. When I slack on recovery - I feel the consequences. It can be a drag, but a few minutes of an arctic blast can do the trick!

TO GIVE: Garmin Fenix 3 HR

I chose the Garmin Fenix 3 HR since it's a multipurpose GPS watch.  I chose the Garmin Fenix 3 HR since it's a multipurpose GPS watch.  As a beginner runner, I tend to learn more about myself with this watch due to the high volume of information it extracts during activities.

TO RECEIVE: GoPro HERO5

I want to capture moments, events, sceneries, and people in the CRew for the memories throughout our journeys together in concrete.

First up is Season 3 runner, Loree @Itsloreeeee:

To Give: Nike Pegasus 33

This would make a great gift for a fellow runner because I love this shoe. I own a pair of Pegasus and it's simply one of the best shoes that I have ran in. The comfort as well as the cushion it provides is well suited for all runners. I'm a heavy foot runner myself and I always looks for a shoe that can absorb the impact that I put on my feet when I run and this shoe does that. I go up a half size with running shoes and I suggest doing that with the Pegasus. It is light but not too light where you will feel impact when either the heel or balls of your feet strike the concrete. With many shoes coming out lately, I still recommend getting a pair of Pegasus to add to the rotation.

To Receive: Nike Lunarepic Flyknit Shield

This is on my wish list because I have yet to own anything Flyknit and my running friends say that this shoe is definitely worth it. They love the comfort that the shoe offers as well as the cushion it provides. It comes close to the Pegasus feeling like some of my friends said. As of my last race, which was in the rain... My shoes were soggy, my feet were cold and well, I wasn't in the greatest of mood with wet socks while running a half marathon but I did suck it up and finished. But these shoes are made with the shield protection so in future rainy wet runs, I'd love to be able to get these bad boys to run in.

Plantronics BackBeat FIT Review

When Plantronics reached out to us to review their BackBeat FIT wireless headphones, we couldn't wait to hit the concrete and try them out.  Check out what our CRew had to say about them:

At first glance these wireless earphones are compact, light, and comes with an awesome carrying case. The carrying case serves dual purpose as a case and if you flip it inside out it is also a arm band. Unfortunately my phone is too large to fit in it, but it is a great design!!

Wearing the earphones, i was nervous about the one-size-fits all, but ear piece fits so well! I absolutely love this being Bluetooth and not having a wire attached to my phone while running. The buttons on each ear piece are multi-functional, which makes it easy to have less buttons. The voice notifications are nice as well in addition to the light notifications to tell you when it is on/off and connected. I also like that when you turn the headset on it tells you the battery life as well.

While on a run the earphones really stayed in place for me no matter how sweaty I was. The sound was clear and crisp, but I was also able to hear what is going on around me, which I liked. I don't like having all the sound be my music, I like to be aware of whats going on around me since I do most of my running around the city. I would definitely recommend these to fellow runners and friends as a go to Bluetooth earphones.

Since upgrading my phone, I've been on the market for wireless headphones.  I received a few recommendations from my fellow Concrete Runners but nothing that I really wanted to purchase and/or try.  I am an avid runner and train in all conditions from boot camp to the gym, from outdoor to indoor running - I need something that will accommodate my lifestyle.  So I was surprised to hear that Plantronics had a line of wireless headsets.  I have used Plantronics for work and was never disappointed in their products.  So I couldn't wait to try the BackBeat Fit headphones.

I received them last week and, so far, I am very pleased. They are light, comfortable and hold its charge for a very long time. Most earpieces are either too large or too long so I was surprised on how well they fit and how comfortable they are. The outer hooks provide stability while running or working out.  Music is clear without any reverberation and does not need any adjustments while running. I typically run with my phone in hand and having the wireless headphones allows me to have a smoother run. The setup to my phone was also easy.   I've only had these for a week so I can't wait to try the other features.

I would also like to add that I attempted to use the headphones at work, since I've used other Plantronics products for conference calls.  At first, I was a little hesitant to use it as I haven't figured out the location of the mic; nonetheless, using the BackBeat Fit headphones for my call was a success.

The headphones have a rubber feel that’s durable and flexible. The fit is very secure and lightweight while running. The control buttons are very easy to work. The left side you can start and stop music selection. On the right side you can answer and drop calls, there is a built in microphone.

The product comes with a charging cable and a case that turns into an arm band. I never run with an arm band so it’s really on used as a case for me.

Product comes in three different colors options: Blue/Black, Grey/Black and Black/Green.

Benefits:

  • Sound sounds great
  • Sweat resistant
  • Easy to setup Bluetooth pairing
  • Fit is very secure
  • Lightweight

I usually run in groups so I rarely use headphones, but now that I have some comfortable, wireless headphones from Plantronics, I might just hit the concrete more so I can listen to my favorite playlists.  These headphones are so easy to use, I have no excuse to speed up my runs to match the beats (I'm not one of those runners who can listen to slow jams on my routes). What I really like about the BackBeat Fit is the fit.  I have previously used the "small" attachments on other wireless headphones, but I literally had to shove the buds into my ears to have them hold.  These Plantronics fit like a glove and are stable on the run.  The cord is kind of long but it doesn't bug me since its flexible.    The case is really convenient too....it's a case and an armband, just flip it inside out.  I can't run with an armband (I'm all fanny pack) but should I need to switch, I have one now.    - By Tiffany, Co-Captain

When I run, I usually wear the standard white wired  apple headphones, but the wires really do bug me that I often opt out of listening to music because they really get in the way! So when I received the Plantronics Back Beat wireless headphones I was thrilled! It was easy to sync, fits perfectly in my ear and the sound quality was great! I tried it out for the first time yesterday while doing some sprints! They stayed in my ear very comfortably! Love it!   - By Samantha, Co-Captain

I have been using the Platronics Backfit Bluetooth Headphones in Grey for over 3 months and here is my review for the design, the technology, and the diversity of usage. I love the modern design with the grey and black palette and it fits perfectly with my small ears. It is very light and durable, because I throw it in my gym bag everyday.  I've tested the nano-coating technology and I give it a 9 out of 10 (being the best) to stay dry with all of my sweat.  During workouts, I would need to wipe it down once which is better than my former "white ear buds".  This headset is very diverse, because I use it for regular phone calls, running, and conference calls.  The battery life last around 5 hours for me and it's easy to charge.    By: Deborah Penaflor, OG
