Meet Janelle Canilao. Janelle has always been a natural at distance running, starting in high school and running for the cross country team in junior college. However, it wasn't until 2006 that running became a lifestyle for her.
That year one of her best friends, Jane, was diagnosed with Leukemia. Janelle was heartbroken. She decided to put her running to a purpose and signed up for the Nike Woman's Marathon (NWM). After months of training, raising over $2.5k for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, with the support of friends and family, and knowing this was nothing compared to the battled that Jane was fighting, she tackled those 26.2 miles like a champ. Every year since then she's run in the NWM in honor of Jane and all those battling cancer.
Since then, she's been hooked on endurance races , completing 8 full marathons (and counting), numerous shorter distance races, mud runs and urban adventure races such as the Men's Health Urbanathlon.
In 2007, her best friend Arlynn had a great idea to start a running group. They both came together, rallying their closest friends, becoming the Running Divas. Looking to corporate all men and women who wanted to join their crew, they expanded, creating the Concrete Runners Crew- A community for all those who are looking to lead a healthier, active life.
You'll usually find Janelle's goofy, upbeat self cheering the other runners at the CR meets as she she runs, often side-side-by-side with her son Jerome Darius, who she adores.
